A Day In The Life
of a
Blackstone
English Cocker Puppy

My day starts out early, around 5:00 am, but Mom usually calls out, "No barking, quiet!" So I hit the snooze button for another 30 – 45 minutes.  After that, I am a busy puppy. My big sister, "Anna", and I have lots to do.  We start with a quick run outside in the kennel area where I do my first relief of the day.  We wrestle, chase and bark at each other and then Mom herds us indoors into the TV room where we go for round two.  After Mom takes care of a few chores, she brings us out for a half-hour to hour walk.  Sometimes Mom gets annoyed with us because we enjoy entangling each other with our flexi-leashes.

After our walk, Mom brings us into the kitchen to feed us breakfast.  Although we have been allowed in many areas of the house, Mom usually keeps us confined to one room at a time with baby gates.  That way we get exposure to different noises and environments while still being under her watchful eye.

Breakfast is one cup of dry puppy food with a couple of tablespoons of cooked oatmeal mixed together with a little warm water.  It is topped off with a tablespoon of any flavor yogurt.  Mom believes in providing us with a balance of commercial puppy food and a natural diet.  On occasion, she will give us a whole raw egg mixed with our food as a change from the oatmeal.  On the weekends Dad gives us a taste of his french toast or blueberry pancakes.  We get raw baby carrots or dog cookies as a snack between meals.  Baby carrots are a great snack and are not as fattening as dog cookies.

After breakfast we head upstairs and wait for Mom in the bathroom as she prepares for work.  How strange, she sings in artificial rain behind a curtain and thinks our barking is weird.  Then she uses a strange machine that makes a lot of noise when she points it at her head.  She has since used that machine on us, but that’s ok because it feels nice and warm and is great after our baths.  Then Mom puts us outside in the kennel area when she leaves for work.  Dad works out of the house so when he has finished breakfast he will put us back in our crates in the kennel room.  By then, we are ready for our nap.

At lunchtime, Dad lets us back outside for an hour or two of more fun and games before he goes back to his office.  By 5:00 PM, Mom is home and we have fun with her until dinner.  Dinner is one cup of dry puppy food combined with Mom’s natural recipe of cooked brown rice and cooked hamburg with the fat removed.  She makes a big pot each week and heats up just what she needs for our meal.

Oh yeah, she makes us wear these silly "snoods".  She says it keeps our ears out of our food and keeps them much cleaner.  Speaking of food, Mom feeds us Iams brand dog food.  If you would like to change my food, please make sure you gradually mix in the new food to my Iams.  Otherwise, sudden changes in diet can give me stomach cramps resulting in "loose" accidents.

After dinner, we help Mom do more of her chores.  I keep the cats occupied while she cleans out their boxes. (Hey, why can’t we do it inside?)  My big sister helps sort the laundry piles.  By ten o’clock Mom is pooped and sends us to bed so we can start it all over again tomorrow.

Sometimes we get to go for a ride in the big van and see new places, people and other canine friends.  We even travel to Michigan when we are young.

I love to retrieve and play with my big sister.  Because of my age Mom is always looking after me.  I love my soft chew-toys and can have them all the time.  As for my rawhide, I am only permitted to have it under supervision.  Mom is afraid that I will choke on the big pieces that I manage to tear off.  I do like to dig in the ground and have been chastised for it.  I can even make it under the gate from one kennel section to another.  I am a good-natured, happy puppy and I learn quickly.  I prefer to be around the company of my family than anyone else.  My Daddy is my best friend and I know he will miss me very much and think of me often.  Mom loves me too, but like all Mothers, thinks that all her children eventually need to leave home and go to their own new family.

My Mom has started me on the heartworm medication, Interceptor, based on my weight.  I will be needing my next monthly pill and each month thereafter until I have my heartworm blood test in the spring.  I have had all four booster shots and a one-year Rabies so I am good for a while.  Just check my medical records.

Mom says that if you have any questions at all, no matter how small, please do not hesitate to call her day or night, at home or work, to get some information on me. In a new home with a new family, I will need a little time to adjust.  I might be misunderstood for a short time.  They tell me my adjustment time is about two weeks.

I am really looking forward to my new home.  Mom says to keep in touch and send her pictures of me with my new family.  She will be so proud..

Love,

Blackstone puppy
